5 Signs it’s Time to Ditch Your Toronto Condo

Share This Post:

Are you totally over condo life? Do you dread getting in the elevator or making small talk with your neighbour in the hall? Are you sick of the traffic, the bright lights, or the noise? On this blog, we talk a lot about the Downtown Toronto lifestyle, and how much we love it. But you know what, if you don’t love it, that’s ok too!

The beauty of life is the ability to change our minds whenever we want, and if condo life is no longer serving you, it’s absolutely fine to make a change.

If you’re on the fence about whether or not you should stay in your Downtown Toronto condo, this post is for you. Here are 5 signs it might be time to ditch your condo for good.

Sign # 1 – You’re Tripping, Literally

Picture this, you’re getting home with an armful of groceries. You open your front door and shuffle into your miniature foyer. Immediately, a dog leash snares your leg, and yesterday’s recycling bin you forgot to get rid of trips you up. You go down–hard. Your avocados roll out of your shopping bag, getting bruised, but maybe not as bruised as your ego.

Nothing is more frustrating than being taken out by inanimate objects. But if you live in a tiny condo that is no longer serving its purpose for you, it might be a fact of life.

If you’re constantly tripping over your belongings or if your drawers and closets are overflowing with stuff, it might be a sign that you need more space.

Sign # 2 – Your Home Office Situation is Lacking

Yes, technology has blessed us with virtual Zoom backgrounds, but if you work from home in a small condo with no dedicated workspace, you’re likely working in your kitchen, bedroom, or living room. No one wants to see your laundry basket or Peleton hanging out in the background of meetings (maybe for you they are one and the same! No judgment).

Working from your kitchen or living room is also simply not comfortable and not at all conducive to a healthy work-life balance.

If you WFH, a dedicated workspace is key. Especially if you live with a partner who also works from home. Imagine this, you and your partner can work in your own offices and not have to speak over each other all day long.

Or how about instead of closing your laptop at 5 pm and having it stare at you all night from your coffee table, you could potentially work in your own home office and simply walk away at quitting time. You could even close the door at the end of the day and finally, fully log off!

Upsizing from a condo is a big step for a lot of people! But the question is, should you buy first or sell first? Learn more here.

Sign # 3 – Downtown Just Doesn’t Hold the Same Appeal

Chances are, when you first moved to a condo Downtown, it was the lifestyle that drew you there in the first place. Everything is within walking distance. You’re living in the heart of urbanity, and every amenity you could ever want is at your fingertips, any time of day. Your options on Uber Eats reads like an international menu of awesomeness.

But now, you might be over it. Maybe you’re tired of takeout bills stacking up. Or maybe you have found that you prefer to go for jogs in the park or bike rides on trails instead of pumping and dipping at your local spin classes.

You’re tired of hearing people in the hall, on the street, and in stores–they’re everywhere. You would kill for some peace and quiet. While some people feel energized and excited about the hustle and bustle of Downtown living, you might just be over it. And that’s ok!

Is it a good idea to hire your BFF to buy or sell your next property? I’m spilling the tea here.

Sign # 4 – Three’s a Crowd in Your Tiny Condo

If you love entertaining and hosting friends and family, a condo might not be the best venue. Open-concept kitchens with no dedicated dining room space might seem functional and practical when you live alone, but when we’re talking about hosting a dinner party, it’s not a good time. No one wants to eat dinner while balancing plates on their knees.

Living in a detached house means more space to prep your famous seven-layer dip. It means barbecues in the summer and holiday gatherings in the winter. It’s simple math. The more space you have, the more friends you can fit!

Sign # 5 – You Can’t Stop Dreaming About It

The heart wants what the heart wants, I say. And if you go to sleep at night and dream about mowing lawns, setting the table in your dedicated dining room, or going to bed at night without hearing your neighbours through the walls, you are likely ready for a home.

Owning a house is obviously more work than a condo, but if it’s what you really want in life, it will enter your subconscious mind in creative ways!

What if a Detached Home Isn’t in the Cards?

Not everyone can afford a Downtown Toronto house. Home prices in the city can be prohibitive in some cases, but if you’re feeling the crunch and you’re itching to get out of your condo, there are always options!

Maybe you move to a less expensive neighbourhood. Maybe you get a semi-detached or a townhouse, or maybe you simply opt for a larger condo in an older, well-maintained building. Regardless of your budget, getting more space in your home is feasible!
